Matthias van Arkel
Biography :
Matthias van Arkel (b 1967) explores three-dimensional corporeality, object-oriented paintings, and materiality of paint. Van Arkel has developed a technique using platinum silicone rubber in replacement of traditional application of paint. Despite the fact that the paintings are corporeal, there is no visible trace of the artist’s hands, presenting an expressive yet systematic approach to his three dimensional paintings. Straddling the realms of painting and sculpture, expression and function, and intuition and process, van Arkel’s work occupy multi-dimensions. Van Arkel runs the silicone rubber through rollers to create colored strips that are then arranged in large metal trays and finally vulcanized at high temperatures in a kiln. Using a process of rolling out chunks of malleable silicone, van Arkel creates elongated, flattened marks made of colorful rubber that often stand in as ersatz brush strokes. The working process and physical properties suggest painterliness and adept manipulation of palette in the tradition of Abstract Expressionism. On the other hand, the industrial materials addresses Minimalism’s object fashioned ideas of materiality and pigment. Van Arkel’s process-oriented approach to working with materials call attention to the works’ physicality and spatial complexity. Matthias van Arkel holds an MFA from the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm, and has studied at the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm. He has exhibited extensively, in Sweden and Internationally, and is represented in prominent public and private collections, including the Böttiger Collection and Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the Public Art Agency Sweden and Stockholm Art Council. Public commissions include Jakobsbergsgatan bus terminal (2011), Kumla Bath (2012), Atlantic Plumbing Building, Washington DC (2015) and Värtahamnen ferry terminal and the Borås International Sculpture Biennale (2016). Matthias van Arkel lives and works in Stockholm,

Josh Rowell
Biography :
Josh Rowell generates his artistic vision by focusing on technological advances that shape our contemporary lives, communicating our increasingly mediated human interactions within the confines of visual art. The artist balances more analogue techniques and laborious production processes with conceptual instantaneous nature of the digital age. This juxtaposition produces a language that explores and reshapes information, and precipitating alternative ways of reading the world around us. Since his emergence as an abstract painter, Rowell has expanded to sculpture, mixed media, and often times working with light, video, and sound installations. Despite these disparate media, everything is underpinned by a coding system, “everything can be reduced to a molecular binarism where all systems can be simplified to yes/no decisions,” the artist explains. Mirroring the proliferation associated with the technological advancements these codes can generate, Rowell paints a vernacular, as evident by his 2016 “Painting Language” series, far more complex and carrying greater levels of information than a traditional one-zero binary. The language of color, pattern, and form, is seen as dots laboriously covering canvases. These sequences, which the artist developed himself, read as a codified communiqué to create new forms of visual text that explore the possibilities and boundaries of expression and information. Born in 1990 in London, England, Rowell graduated from Kingston University in 2013, where he received his Bachelor’s of Arts with honors. Following an extended study in Art Criticism at Central Saint Martins college, Rowell received his MFA in Fine Art at Kingston University in 2015, where he was awarded the first class distinction. He has shown in many exhibitions in London’s vibrant art scene and is part of Kingston University’s contemporary art collection. Josh Rowell lives and works in London, England.

Christian Voigt
Biography :
Christian Voigt has developed a language capable of telling new stories. He continually works to refine a pictorial idiom, the stories he wants to tell, the feelings he convey. His principal areas of interest are landscape and architecture, but he also does portraits and nudes. The travels associated with his projects and places call for concentration for the ability to fully understand people, their history and their religion. Christian Voigt works with large-format cameras, both digital and analogue. He experiments with new camera techniques and makes the best use of the digital medium. In the museum edition, his large-format pictures can measure as much as eight meters in width. But his strictly limited editions also come in sizes that customers and collectors can hang on walls of more modest sizes. His series on the vanished architecture of the past and its appearance in our own times come across just as vividly as the craziness of today’s societies that his images depict. “My pictures are created with the camera, not on the computer,” he says, with a reference to the complicated technology and processing that goes into his creations. “But without the computer technology of today, the pictures couldn’t be crafted into their final form.” Born in Munich, Germany, Christian Voigt lives and works in Hamburg and the south of France. His current studio is situated in Hamburg.
