El Castillo Bryan
Biography :
Bryan El Castillo deconstructs and reconstructs layers of photographs and painting to create a fractured and emotionally charged image. Through a technique of collaging photographs on canvas and overpainting, the artist focuses on the mystique of the individual, the search for identity in an ego-centric culture and the impact of our own selfish and indifferent actions over the environment.
El Castillo has created several series of work, including self-portraits examining the effect of television, film and internet on the viewer’s psyche. The daily barrage of media images takes on a generation too narcissistic to consider the consequences of daily actions. His latest series focuses on retro imagery combined with world events to question our perception.
El Castillo has also contributed work to the documentary Amazon Aid, which exposes illegal gold mining in the Amazon, to be released in 2012. WESTWOOD GALLERY NYC has exhibited Bryan El Castillo’s artwork since 2007.

Lurie Boris
Biography :
WESTWOOD GALLERY NYC is pleased to present paintings, drawings, collage and original artwork by Boris Lurie (1924-2008) at the debut of Art Southampton (July 26-30, 2012). This extraordinary artist co-founded the NO!art movement in 1959. Westwood Gallery will exhibit 1950s and 60s works of art in their booth, which highlight the expressive, experimental and significant artwork by Lurie. The gallery premiered the first New York exhibition in June 2010, after the artist’s death.
In 1946, after surviving the Holocaust, Lurie moved to New York City where he became a part of the underground art scene through a movement he co-founded with Sam Goodman (1919-1967) and Stanley Fisher (1926-1980). The NO!art movement was a form of free expression, without commercial motivation, encompassing the artists’ views on politics, society, art, personal experiences and visceral expression.
At the time, NO!art was largely rejected by art critics, museums and collectors, until the artists and artwork of NO!art became more understood and accepted in the art world. In 1970 Lurie wrote a statement for an exhibition in Germany, “The time for Yes-art is not at all at hand. Who knows? Maybe NO!art’s time is yet to come.” Boris Lurie was known for his startling images of pin-ups incorporated into Holocaust photographs, as well as sculptural work with clothing scraps. The collages with ‘pin-ups’ reflect the paper constructions Lurie created over the decades utilizing pages from ‘girlie magazines’, an alluring objectification, which encompassed much of his work, and the paintings indicate Lurie’s fascination with the female archetype, based on relationships with women throughout his life.
Lurie’s artwork has been exhibited at Weimar-Buchenwald Memorial, Germany, Block Museum of Art Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, Chelsea Museum, New York City, University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City, IA and other museums and galleries in the U.S., Germany, Latvia and Israel
